Walk-by Survey at Schwab IMPACT® Conference Shows Strong Interest in Emerging Markets Investments
November 14
New York
Mirae Asset Global Investments USA LLC ("Mirae Asset"), one of the world's leading emerging markets equity investment managers, today announced results of a walk-by survey of RIA firms in attendance at Schwab's IMPACT ® 2011 conference that showed a strong interest in current and continued investments in emerging markets equities. The surveys were taken at the conference which was held from November 2-4.
Of the total participants, 97% are currently invested in emerging markets equities. Asked how their allocations to emerging markets equities would change over the next year, 60% said that they would allocate more toward emerging markets, while 13% said they would allocate the same amount. Placing emerging markets in a client's long-term investment horizon, only 9% classified the asset class as speculative. The remainder divided emerging markets equities between core (51%) and satellite (40%).
"With typical emerging markets portfolio allocations below 5%, we're encouraged that these advisors recognize the importance of an emerging markets component to their clients' portfolios," said Peter Graham, President of Mirae Asset Discovery Funds.
The two most common vehicles for client exposure to emerging markets were open-end mutual funds, used by 44% of respondents, and exchanged-traded funds or other exchange-trade products, which were used by 23% of respondents. Other vehicles used include American Depositary Receipts (7%), closed-end funds (4%), unit investment trusts (2%) and equities in U.S. companies that have emerging markets exposure.
When selecting a fund or product to invest in emerging markets, 48% of advisors told us that they preferred vehicles with exposure emerging markets globally, 31% said that they preferred a global equity allocation with exposure to emerging markets, while 18% said they preferred investments with a single-country or regional exposure.
Some 83% of the 35 participants in the survey said that finding useful information about emerging markets investing was either "very easy" or "fairly easy." Only 17% found obtain such information difficult."
